Aboveground (AG) LP Storage Tanks

Hands down, the biggest concerns and questions that arise from those considering the purchase of an LP storage tank are; "How big is the tank?" and "What's it going to look like?" Below are some examples to help answer those questions.

PAINTING (DECALS)

Some clever & fun ways of making your Above ground LP storage tank more appealing.

Though there is no actual "Code" preventing you from painting your purchased LP storage tank there is a reason LP storage tanks are painted white by the tank manufacturers. The white paint helps reflect the sun from overheating the LP storage tank in the summer months. If the LP storage tank becomes overheated and is full to capacity (usually 80%) there is a real possibility that the propane can expand inside the tank to a pressure higher than the limit of the built in pressure relief valve on the tank. When the LP vapor pressure surpasses this limit the tank will "blow off" vapor to the atmosphere to decrease the pressure inside the tank. Blow off can be a fire danger and is alarming in sound and appearance when it does happen. Most propane delivery companies do not fill ANY LP storage tanks to capacity in the warm summer months just for this reason. However, it can occasionally happen. If the LP storage tank is filled to a lower capacity and the tank is not located directly exposed to constant sunlight (in a somewhat shaded area) in the warmest times of the year the risk of “blow off” is greatly reduced.
